Diablo Immortal is more than a brand Quote | Reply

On the Apple App Store However, Diablo Immortal has a rating of 4.5 out five stars. "Finally an app for mobile well-executed!" comments one user.

In their way, both these ratings are correct.

Diablo Immortal is more than a brand new game in Blizzard's legendary action-RPG game series, it frames Diablo in a different context. It has a number of new scenarios, in fact specifically designed for mobile devices that have touchscreen controls. It's an online game that is massively multiplayer featuring a shared environment where players can be seen moving around. It's developed with a Chinese company called NetEase, and, like every Blizzard game before it, it's been made with an eye at Asian markets. The game is completely free. These are massive sea-level changes for Diablo.

However for any Diablo player -- particularly any Diablo 3 player -- Diablo Immortal will feel reassuringly familiar. The distinctive isometric perspective, fast-paced combat with swarms of monsters, as well as the fountains of loot, are all present. Beyond that, Immortal has clearly been built upon it's Diablo 3 engine and uses the assets of the game, but it retains the feeling and atmosphere of its 2012 title from Blizzard. Immortal's artwork displays the same vibrantly colored golden glow, the combat offers the same intoxicating fireworks display, and the crackle and splatter of the sound effects are the same as the, Pavlovian satisfaction.

The reason is that Immortal is an identical game set in an entirely new setting that the opinions of different segments of its fans can vary greatly. Existing Diablo gamers are dissatisfied with the way their beloved game is made to be monetized in the new free-to-play version, while mobile game customers, more familiar with this model of business are thrilled with the quality, depth and scope that Immortal has inherited the previous versions. There is no difference between the two but should we say that this is due to different strokes and move on? No, not really, because Diablo Immortal isn't only at the center of a game war. It's also at war with its own game.
