Sorry I’m new to this.

I need a basic system that can keep track of an issue with a particular unit AND customer. That is, a specific piece of equipment may get transferred from person to person but I need to keep track of the history of the problems with the unit as well as who is currently having the problem with the item…

Am I making sense?

Can anyone give some suggestions, have no idea what this feature would be called…

You'll be looking for a help desk that offers "asset tracking".
There are 76 help desks listed on this site with that feature.

Checkout Severity One they have an online asset register that may suit.
